C.M.W..MaóThe public bus service linking Maó to the airport will be operational from 1st June. An agreement was signed this week between the Island Council and Autocares Torres under which the route that the bus will follow between the two destinations was laid out. During the summer months there will be 34 journeys per day, starting at 0545 hrs. from the bus station in Maó and continuing every half hour until 2215 hrs. In addition, a bus will leave the airport at midnight to ensure that all the airport employees can Œcatch the last bus home´, together with any passengers on delayed flights. During the winter months the timetable will be reduced to 17 journeys per day, with a bus leaving every hour. Two buses, capable of carrying 14 seated passengers and 18 standing plus 1 wheelchair, will cover the route which will take in the airport, the Central Avenue on the industrial estate, the Municipal Sports Centre, the Jardins de Malbúger, Avenida J. Anselm Clavé, the Bus Station, Avenida J.M. Quadrado, Dalt Sant Joan (the medical centre), S´Hort Nou (at the landward end of the port), the Estación Marítima, Moll de Ponent, Costa d´en Reynes, Club Marítimo, the Hospital Verge del Toro, Fort de l´Eau, Colegio Verge del Carme and the Cemetery. The transport compny predicts that between 40,000 and 50,000 passengers will use the service during the first year, which would make it economically viable. However, should the service suffer financial losses these will be assumed by the Island Council, which would also benefit should the service show a profit. Maó-Ciutadella It has finally been decided that there will be 16 buses each way daily covering the route between Maó and Ciutadella. An agreement was signed last week between the Island Council and Transportes Menorca S.A. under which the bus company will start the new timetable during the first week in June, at a date yet to be decided.
