Christine Watterson.MaóCiutadella Council has plans to build an exhibition centre on the green belt area of Canal Salat, once the process of purchasing the necessary land from its current owners has been accomplished. The proposal is at present on public display for a period of 30 days.
Canal Salat´s green belt covers an area of 103,500 sq.m. between the Ronda Sur, Vía Perimetral and calle Sant Antoni Maria Claret and is currently classified as an open area in the town´s plans. The land is a collection of plots belonging to 15 different owners, including the Council.
The project includes the construction of two exhibition halls, built in parallel in the southern sector, each of which would measure 1,200 sq.m. in area. These could be used individually or jointly for fairs and exhibitions. An access road to the site from the Ronda Sur is also proposed.
The central part of the zone would house a children´s play area and a public park of some 10,000 sq.m.
The project includes a green belt of some 71,000 sq.m. which would act as a visual and acoustic barrier between the park and the Ronda Sur. The existing vegetation in this area would be cleared and trees, such as pines, wild olives and holm oaks, would be planted.
The architects propose creating two car parks. The first would be situated on the northern side, with access from the Vía Perimetral and an area of 3,500 sq.m., and would be used by visitors to the park and exhibition centre. The second, measuring 1,500 sq.m., would be adjacent to the Canal Salat Medical Centre and would be used by patients attending the centre once the new extension has been built on the current car park. An existing warehouse near the Vía Perimetral will be converted to form an auditorium of 600 sq.m. and to provide an access from the north.
The total cost of the project is estimated at some 2,222,444 euros.
