C.M.W..MaóAlaior Council and IBASAN (the Balearic Sanitation Department) have agreed that the project for the new sewage farm, which will service Cala en Porter, will start within two months; once the necessary licences and permissions have been granted. A period of five months will then be needed to award the contract, estimated at 5.8 million euros, to a construction company and fifteen months more for the work to be completed.
Designed to put an end to the continuous complaints about the smells emanating from the existing plant, the new station will have double the capacity for purifying water and will be capable of treating the liquid waste generated by 15,000 inhabitants. In addition, the waste will be treated to a greater degree than at present. It is calculated that the new sewage farm will adequately serve the urbanisations of Cala en Porter, Cales Coves and Son Vitamina for the next 25 years, taking into account future increases in population figures.
Sanitation Inspectors
The Regional Department of the Environment is to increase its budget for the maintenance of the sewerage system in the Balearic Islands by 34% for the period 2005-2007, investing 15.2 million euros in this field.
One of the department´s proposals is to take on five inspectors (one in Menorca) who will control and co-ordinate all sanitation projects. In addition, the workforce will be increased by 31.67% during this period, bringing the number of employees to 165.
