C.M.W..MaóUnder a recently-signed coastal agreement, Menorca is to receive 18.2 million euros, 16.6 million of which will be provided by the State Government and 1.6 by the Balearic Government.
The projects which will be financed by this grant were presented last week by Jaume Font, the Regional Minister for the Environment. The largest proportion of the money will be spent on work on the Punta Prima seafront, 6.6 million euros in total. Creating a path for walkers between Cala Galdana and Son Bou will account for 1.9 million of the budget and landscaping the area at the mouth of Ciutadella port, Cala en Blanes and Sa Farola will require a further 1.5 million euros.
Three million euros have been set aside for the fight against erosion, although no concrete prject has yet been submitted, and a further million for infrastructure around the coastline.
Other projects on the island which will be financed by the ministry include: planning for public use of the coast and protecting the dunes at Son Bou beach (400,000 euros); work on the Camí de Cavalls path between Son Xoriguer and Cala Galdana (810,000 euros); conservation of the area around Sa Mesquida and improving the seafront (two sums of 400,000 and 600,000 euros respectively); and improving invalid access to beaches, 330,000 euros.
The Balearic Government is also to finance a project in Alfurí de Dalt in 2006 which will include improvements to the access routes and conservation of natural areas and which will require an investment of 1.6 million euros.
Four of the projects planned in Menorca are in the Ciutadella district, two in Maó, and one each in Sant Lluís and Alaior.
Coastal projects in the Balearic Islands as a whole will require some 59.5 million euros from the State Government and 61.2 million from the local government.
