The Mayor, Pau Morlà, referred to the need to patrol Son Bou and Cala en Porter during the winter months as justification for creating the new unit
C.M.W..MaóAlaior Council is to create a nocturnal unit within the Policía Local to provide the human resources and equipment necessary for night patrols in the district. A council meeting in April approved the sum of 60,000 euros to cover the costs of this additional unit. The Mayor of Alaior, Pau Morlà, states that the new unit will be formed by seven or eight agents with a co-ordinator who has yet to be named. The main task of this new force will be to provide extra vigilance in the district, especially in Cala en Porter and Son Bou (two urbanisations which have recently suffered from a number of burglaries). Morlà explains that, with the onset of the tourist season, the amount of commercial and leisure activity in the district has increased, especially at night. This prompted the Council and the Policía Local to agree a few weeks ago to increase the hours worked by the police to ensure that all aspects of policing could be covered. Pau Morlà has confirmed that the night patrol unit will not only function during the tourist season but also during the rest of the year. He stressed the need for patrols in the urbanisations during the winter period as well as in the industrial zone and the outskirts. The Local Police force in Alaior has 27 policemen.
