C.M.W..MaóThe Balearic Government Council last week approved the sum of 3,107,521 euros as finance for the construction of the future headquarters for the National Maritime Training Centre which will be located in the Maó district. The project already has governmental approval and construction work is expected to start towards the end of this year.
Designed by architect Josep Maria Villalonga, the centre will be built on a 12,860 sq.m. plot owned by Maó Council in Bintaufa. The ground floor of the two-storey building will cover 1,810 sq.m. and the first floor 269 sq.m. and the new centre will be fitted with classrooms for the teaching of theory, workshops and a large shed for boat repairs. There will also be a store room, changing rooms, cafeteria and all the other services which are required in a teaching establishment.
The centre will specialise in the assembly and repair of nautical engines, welding, repairs to boats and sails, nautical tourism, the conservation of the environment and coastline and diverse fringe subjects such as computer studies and languages.
The aim is to offer training courses in different areas of the profession and to help improve the quality of occupational training.
Research and development projects backed by the E.U. will be carried out, inter-regional collaboration will be encouraged and new teaching methods will be tested out.
