C.M.W..MaóWork on providing the infrastructure for the fourth phase of the Maó Industrial Estate is entering its final month. During a visit to the site last week, the Mayor, Arturo Bagur, and Deputy Mayor, Gari Petrus, said that the latest forecast was that the inauguration could be held at the end of February.
On the list of items still pending the main job is the construction of a roundabout, which will connect the main road on the industrial estate (to be called Avenida Europa) to the road linking the Me-1 to the airport roundabout, and work has already started on preparing the ground. Gari Petrus explained that construction of the roundabout would start once the relevant permissions had been received from the Highways Department, adding that traffic along this route may possibly be disrupted for a couple of days during this stage.
The Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Town and Environment commented that other items which remained to be completed included various details of the electricity supply, the installation of a green filter to collect rainwater and transport it to the Vergers de Sant Joan gorge, plus the relocation of numerous ethnological pieces which had been found in the area affected by the project. This task is being undertaken in collaboration with the Island Council´s Heritage Department. Trees have already been planted and the road markings have been painted on the asphalt, all of which give the overall impression that the project is nearing completion.
Maó Council is making use of the time remaining to the official inauguration to introduce various groups in the municipal district to the IV phase of the industrial estate, including representatives from management or unions and the press, so that they can observe the project and appreciate "the magnitude and quality of the work which has been carried out".
