c.m.w..MaóAENA´s board of directors has given approval for contracts to be awarded for two projects aimed at improving the facilities at Menorca Airport through the installation of a new luggage inspection system, embarkation walkways and aircraft aids. With a completion time of 30 months, the projects will cost a total of 6,001,290 euros.
A spokesman for the organisation responsible for managing the airport, AENA, explained that, at present, the check-in desks are connected to various inspection machines and thence to conveyor belts. Current work on extending the airport will increase the number of check-in desks from 22 to 44 and the new desks will have to be connected to the system so that all the luggage can be inspected.
The inspection system will include four carousels for collecting luggage and the installation of six EDS machines, luggage conveyor belts, a control system and a new double carousel.
The provision of walkways and aircraft aids should allow passengers to board and leave aircraft more easily and in greater comfort and safer conditions and also allow a quicker turn-round for aircraft. This, in turn, will make the airport more profitable and increase worker safety by reducing the number of people and vehicles on the apron.
The contract for the walkways and aircraft aids has been awarded to Thyssenkrupp Airport Systems for 4,135,609 euros.
The aircraft assistance equipment includes visual docking aids and units to air-condition aircraft and provide them with electricity whilst they are linked to one of the five walkways, one of which will be reserved for regional flights.
