Acciona cancels one of Barcelona connections until end of February
The shipping company Acciona-Trasmediterrànea has cancelled one of the sea links to Barcelona until the end of the month, as the vessels are due for technical inspection. The cancelled connection is the ferry that departed from Barcelona on Friday and returned there on Saturday.
The cancellation leaves the island with two connections to Barcelona and one to Valencia each week.
Cruise passengers in Maó increased by 14% last year
Last year a total of 103,574 passengers on cruise ships visited Maó, an increase of 14% on the previous year and the biggest rise in the Balearic Islands. This was in spite of a drop of 2% in the number of liners calling at the Menorcan port.
Maó also saw an increase of 4% in passengers on scheduled services with a total of 181,588, the only port in the Balearic Islands to experience a growth in this area.
However, in common with other ports in the region, Maó registered a drop in the volume of cargo entering the port, 10% less than in 2007.
Diario "Menorca" celebrates 68th anniversary
Sunday marked the 68th anniversary of the island's newpaper, the diario "Menorca", which was first published on 1st February 1941.
Successful fundraising cookery demonstration and lunch for Red Cross
The cookery demonstration and lunch held on Friday to raise funds for the Red Cross proved to be very successful and was a sell-out event.
Anthony O'Garra, the chef at Port Antico Restaurant, demonstrated a three-course menu to the audience, including hints and tips for a successful dinner party, the correct use of knives, how to make stock and how to fillet a whole salmon.
Guests then dined on the food cooked by Anthony which included Curried Apple and Parsnip Soup, Oriental Salmon and a Baileys and Mascarpone Trifle.
The Red Cross were delighted to receive a donation of 245 euros from Anthony and his wife Laura.
So successful was the combined demonstration and lunch that it is hoped that it will become an annual Red Cross fundraising event.
Two for One sale at Age Concern shop to start on Saturday
A "Two for One" sale (excluding items of furniture) will start at the Age Concern shop in Es Castell this Saturday.
Located at 39 Calle Cala Padera the shop, which is staffed by volunteers, is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 0930 to 1300 hrs.
Tourist information office to open in Es Castell
Es Castell Council announced that a new tourist information office was to be opened in the town this week.
Located in one of the former barracks, the Cuartel de Intendencia, around the town square (Plaza de la Explanada, 13) the office will be manned by Judit Carles and will be open from 0900 to 1400 hrs. during the winter.
