Last Friday saw the official inauguration of the Fundación Equelia, a non-profit making organisation dedicated to promoting equestrian tourism in Spain, the first foundation of its kind in the world. All aspects of the specialised holidays will be co-ordinated by the Fundación Equelia, from flights to hotels and riding stables.

The foundation's web page gives details of the different treks on the island, including restaurants, cultural visits and shopping centres. Outlets participating in the scheme are required to pay 250 euros per year to the foundation, the money being used for social ends as the foundation wants to sponsor sport for the disabled and to help families or riders who have suffered accidents in sports competitions.

Founded by Jeffrey Quirk, Pere Martínez, Nando Pons, Colin Guanaria and Sally Brunt, Equelia started on its mission three months ago.
