Cocaine. Part of the 962 gms. seized by the police during the operation

Police in Ciutadella have arrested eleven people on suspicion of introducing cocaine to the island and distributing it. In total, 962 gms. of the drug were seized during the operation codenamed 'Barry' which started several months ago.

The first arrest was in November when a 38-year old Colombian, J. Z. V., was discovered trying to bring 650 gms. of cocaine in to the island, concealed in a specially-made compartment in an Audi A4. Another Colombian, E. R. B., 39 years, was then arrested for receiving the drugs for cutting and later distribution in the Ciutadella area.

Within the next few weeks police arrested H. M. A. C., a 45-year old Colombian, and a 20-year old Ecuatorian, D. S. C., who had 300 gms. of cocaine hidden inside his body to deliver to his accomplice.

Finally, the police arrested the other members of the gang who were waiting to receive the drugs for distribution to leisure outlets in the area. These were: R. Z. C., Argentinian, 58 years and an owner of a local nightclub; A. S., 35 and also Argentinian; E. A. P., a 41-year old Dominican; and four more Colombians - F. M. L., 31; L. C., 30; A. C., 34; and D. P. N. 23. All of these are accused of selling and distributing the banned substance.

During the operation police carried out two house searches during which officers seized scales for weighing and distributing the drug, cash, various documents regarding transactions, mobile telephones and another 12 gms. of cocaine.

Ten suspects detained for various robberies in Maó

To date six suspects have been arrested for 29 robberies of various outlets in Maó during December.

On 5th January officers arrested three Maó residents, O. S. K., F. S. G. and J. S. F., in connection with nine robberies with force in commercial establishments and bars in the centre of the town and four robberies of shops. House searches led to the recovery of some of the stolen items.

On 27th January another Maó resident, F. S. G., was arrested on suspicion of having committed two robberies with force and an attempted break in at outlets in the area. This person was identified from a photograph by a witness.

On 30th January, S. Z. H., a Maó resident, was arrested in connection with a robbery with force at a home in Es Grau. This person confessed to police.

On 3rd February police arrested A. M. O., from Es Castell, in connection with 12 robberies and attempted robberies at bars and commercial outlets in the centre of Maó and the Parish rectory of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. This person also confessed his guilt.

Police have now arrested four people in total in connection with a robbery in Calle Sant Josep in Maó during which an 85-year old woman, her handicapped daughter and a neighbour were bound and gagged. The first person to be detained was a South American man who had been resident in Menorca for several years and already had a police record. Another three people were later arrested and the case is now closed.

Two detained in connection with robberies in Ciutadella

Two youths, both aged 20 and from Ciutadella, were arrested two weeks ago in connection with a series of robberies in the old centre of the town, many of which were carried out in Calle Carnisseria.

J. M. Ll. and X. M. V. are accused of carrying out various robberies individually and others together. Police carried out house searches during which various items that had been stolen during the robberies were discovered and seized.

The two youths, both of whom already had a police record, appeared before a court and were released after 72 hours.
