Workman dies after lorry plunges off jetty

A 42-year old Ecuadoran workman died last Tuesday when the lorry he was driving plunged off the jetty under construction near Ciutadella. Emergency services called to the scene were unable to resuscitate the man. The cause of the accident is not yet known and is under investigation by the police.

Island to have mobile electricity substation

The electricity company, ENDESA, is ordering two mobile substations, one for Menorca and the other for Ibiza. Once manufactured to the company's specifications and tested, the substation will be used when the electricity supply is cut, whether due to a fault or maintenance or repair work, thus ensuring an uninterrupted supply to consumers.

Twelve flights delayed by absentee workers

Twelve flights between Menorca and Barcelona were delayed by an average of 48 minutes on Sunday due to the situation at Barcelona airport.According to AENA, a total of 61 people were scheduled for duty in the Barcelona control centre but 28 (46%) failed to show for work, 24 of whom claimed medical reasons for their absence. AENA believes that the number of absentees, who in most cases notified the company too late for substitutes to be found, was an attempt to disrupt air traffic that inconvenienced passengers and airlines.


"Journey through Space" at La Mola

On three nights in July (20th, 21st and 22nd) and a further three in August (3rd, 4th and 5th), the Fortress Isabel II at La Mola is offering visitors a "Journey through Space".This tour will take the spectator from the early observations made by Galileo to the discoveries made by space telescopes. A mobile planetarium will provide the sensation of an intergalactic voyage. The sessions, which will start at 2000 hrs. and finish at approximately 2330 hrs., will include direct observation of the visible sky and a visit to the Galileo Galilei exhibition.Booking in advance is necessary as places are limited (tel. 971 364 040 or 686 659 400) and the cost is 18 euros for adults and 12 euros for children aged from 6 to 12 years.

Traditional crafts on show in Es Mercadal

For the third year running, Es Mercadal has organised a "Craft Tour" which will take visitors to traditional craftmen's workplaces such as a blacksmith's dating from the beginning of the last century, a twentieth century flour mill, the water cistern constructed in 1735 on the orders of the British Governor, Richard Kane, and Es Mercadal's Craft Centre. Starting at 1900 hrs. the tour will take place every Wednesday during July and August and will end with visitors being given a taste of the local cuisine.

Golf competition in aid of cancer charity

The Barclays Foundation is to organise its first charity golf competition in aid of the AECC, the Spanish Cancer Association. This will be held on 14th August at the Son Parc course and will be an open pairs greensome competition with additional prizes on certain holes.
