For the first time in several years, the early results in the tourist sector have shown an improvement. The month of June has given rise to hope of a recovery, as, not only was the downward trend in tourist numbers halted, but there was actually a slight improvement, especially with regard to the traditional markets.

The figures show that around 70% of the foreign visitors to the island were British, making the U.K. the island's major source for tourists.

Compared to June last year the occupancy rate in hotels increased by 5.5%.

Although the increase in tourist numbers is relatively small, all the island's most important markets (the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy) showed positive figures leading to cautious optimism for the high season months of July and August which is when it will become clear if there has been a change in trends or whether June was just a 'flash in the pan'.
