The main road between Maó and Ciutadella was the scene of another serious accident last Wednesday when two vehicles collided head-on at km. 41, between Ses Arenetes Quarry and the Naveta des Tudons. As a result of the crash, the drivers of the two vehicles involved, a van and a refrigerated lorry, were taken to the Mateu Orfila Hospital in Maó and a 19-year old youth was treated at the scene.

The 49-year old lorry driver, B.D., and a 64-year old man, D.M., both suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and were kept in hospital.

The accident occurred at around 1515 hrs. and emergency services called to the scene included a fire engine. Three firemen had to rescue the injured from the wreckage using hydraulic equipment.Long tailbacks resulted and Guardia Civil officers had to control the traffic until late in the afternoon when the flow returned to normal.

Witnesses wanted

The families of the two cyclists killed on the Me-1 near Alaior last week are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help clarify the cause of the accident in which two other cyclists were injured.

On returning home after a holiday in Cala Blanca, David Murtagh, a British tourist from Southampton, reported to this paper that shortly before the accident he had witnessed the white Citroën C3 involved being driven in a dangerous manner, including overtaking three vehicles at a time, whilst the two occupants were laughing.

Information is sought, not only on the Citroën driver's conduct between 0700 and 0730 hrs., prior to the accident, but also on how the driver and his passenger spent the early hours of Sunday morning (1st August) in Es Pla in the port of Ciutadella.

The two 21-year old youths, both from good families in Barcelona, were in the Bar Esfera before driving back to Maó and being involved in the fatal accident. One of them was dressed that night in an off-white, short-sleeved sports sweater and jeans and was wearing an earring; the other, a blue shirt with long sleeves that were rolled up and white trousers.
