Residents to keep 50% travel discount

After a period of uncertainty about the future of travel discounts for residents in the Balearic Islands, the Canaries, Ceuta and Melilla, the minister José Blanco announced on Sunday that the 50% reduction in air and sea fares would be retained.

He stated that the Government aimed to combat fraud and would work with airlines to reduce tariffs which, in his view, "are very dear". He pointed out that "it is easier and cheaper to go from Mallorca to the Soviet Union than from Ibiza or Menorca to Madrid".

Suspect arrested for four robberies

Police have arrested a 21-year old resident, J.M.L., in connection with four robberies in Son Vilar, Cap d'en Font and Binissafúller and have recovered a gold watch encrusted with diamonds and valued at 3,000 euros.

A second suspect, J.S.F., 29 years old and also resident on the island, was arrested two days later after being named as an accomplice by J.M.L. However, he has since been released without charge after a judge ruled the accusation was false and had been made for personal reasons.
