The project "Entre Pins 1" has been selected as the winner from the 27 entrants in the competition to design the new medical centre for Alaior, its authors Antoni Pericàs Campins and Álvaro Homar Ortigüela receiving the 5,000 euro prize.

At a cost of 2.8 million euros the new centre will have 12,098 patients on its lists. The 2,348 sq.m. building will be constructed on a plot bordered by the Avenida Verge del Toro, Carrer de ses Escoles, Carrer A and Costa des Pou which Alaior Council has ceded to the Regional Department of Health.

Comprising three blocks of varying heights, the centre will be faced in white concrete with strips of wood that have been treated to control solar radiation and give warmth to the design. It will be provided with a car park for 24 vehicles.

The eight consulting rooms will be more generously proportioned than in Es Banyer, at 20 sq.m. each compared to the current 8-16 sq.m., and there will be a radiology section and larger physiotherapy area.

The architects have until the beginning of the year to draw up the working plan for the centre which should open in 2012.
