The Menorcan Hoteliers' Association, ASHOME, is to join the Spanish Federation for Tourist Hotels and Accommodation (CEHAT) in taking the British tour operator Thomas Cook to the European Tribunal for the Defense of Free Competition in Brussels.

The President of ASHOME, Joan Melis, considers that the tour operator's decision to deduct 5% from all invoices issued by Menorcan hoteliers in July and August is illegal, Thomas Cook having stated that their action was designed to offset seasonal losses caused by the volcanic ash cloud.

The move is aimed to stop tour operators carrying out similar unilateral actions in the future which would put at risk the system of guaranteed contracts and payments.

Hoteliers in Italy, Greece, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta are considering taking similar action against Thomas Cook.
