Destroyed. Part of the ‘caseta’ has totally collapsed

A hut in the Tirassec area partially collapsed on Saturday afternoon. "Villa Torrent" was one of the buildings which suffered extensive damage following subsidence in the area of allotments in Ferreries last February, since when the 'caseta' has been cordoned off due to its unstable state.

The collapse at the weekend left half the building still standing but the rest in ruins, one end wall having disappeared to leave a view of a domestic interior with tables, chairs and sideboard.

In all, seven properties were affected by the subsidence in February, since when the owners have been left on tenterhooks, not knowing the cause of the landslip nor whether it would reoccur. Initial inspections by engineers sent by the Balearic Government resulted in a report that concluded that geotechnical studies would be needed to decide the future of the area. These would be at the expense of the property owners in the area, who are currently looking at quotes received for carrying out the study.

The association of owners has decided to go ahead with the study, despite the cost (which will be shared by all the owners irrespective of whether or not their property was affected by the subsidence) and the uncertainty over the findings. There is an underlying concern that the collection of allotments, which is currently in the throes of being legalised, may finally be declared uninhabitable.
