The Councillor for Tourism and Labour, Joana Barceló, and the Mayor of Es Mercadal, Francesc Ametller, agreed last week to collaborate on a project to remodel and extend the municipal sports area.

Both agreed that the district has great potential for complementing conventional tourism with alternatives, such as that connected to conventions or fairs, or the nautical, sporting or health worlds.

According to the Mayor, this is the reason that the Council is trying to diversify the facilities and activities on offer to tourists and also to attract out-of-season visitors.

The existing sports area comprises football, basketball, tennis and petanca clubs together with a swimming pool. The project envisages unifying the different areas, and extending the sports complex with the construction of a new heated pool and multi-purpose halls, giving Es Mercadal: two tennis courts; a new social area with offices, store room and a bar with terraces overlooking the existing car park and football pitches; a children's area; two heated indoor pools, one for adults the other for children; a 'wellness' area with jacuzzi, saunas and steam baths; a larger fitness area; and a car park. Elements such as solar panels would be used to achieve the best energy efficiency.

At a cost of around 5.9 million euros, the project would allow hotels to increase the facilities they offer, especially to the more elderly clients, according to Barceló.

It is hoped that the plans will be completed within four months so that the project can then move forward.
