The Balearic Government has been placing announcements in the local press advising consumers on their rights to compensation as a result of delays and cancellations caused by the air traffic controllers' walkout.

The advice is to keep all the original flight or holiday documents (bookings, tickets, boarding cards, package holiday contracts) as well as bills and tickets for accommodation and meals generated through the delay or cancellation of the flight. Any claim should be presented as soon as possible, although there is no expiry date on claims made through administrative channels.

Flight tickets - the cost of the ticket plus any additional expenses for meals and accommodation resulting from the delay or cancellation of the flight should be claimed directly from the airline which has seven days in which to settle the claim. If unsuccessful the claim should be presented to the Agència Estatal de Seguretat Aèria or the Direcció General de Consum.

Combined journeys - the cost of the combined journey and any additional expenses, as above, should be claimed from the travel agency or tour operator from whom it was bought, which then has 30 days to comply. If unsuccessful, the claim should be taken to the Tourism Department of the Balearic Government or the Island Council.

Other financial losses - money lost through hotel bookings, car hire, tickets for shows, courses that should have been attended, etc., should be reclaimed from AENA.
